About the Countertop Microwave Oven

One of the most high-tech kitchen appliances found in most homes today is the countertop microwave oven. The technology that gave birth to this modern marvel is radar. One day, a technician from Raytheon was fiddling with an active radar set when he found out that a piece of chocolate bar that was in range was melting. The microwave radiation emitted by the radar was cooking the candy bar! As a fruit of this accidental discovery (or invention?), the world’s first microwave oven came into being. Compared to today’s compact countertop microwaves, the Radarange was a monster that weighed 340 kilograms and cost 5,000 dollars each.

After its discovery in 1945, is an indispensable kitchen tool for most families who are hard pressed for time. Innovations added to most modern units dispel the notion that microwave oven cooking produces bland and boring results. For example, a convection microwave oven combines the speed of microwave cooking with the ability to brown foods. Other ovens have high powered halogen bulbs that heat the surface of the food at high temperatures using infrared radiation thus adding browning abilities to the oven.

Most countertop microwave ovens have settings that control the oven’s power level. Internally, the magnetron that is the source of the oven’s microwave energy has only one level of power output, what the power setting control does is to turn the magnetron on and off depending on the power setting chosen. So if one wants higher power output, the magnetron works in longer duty cycles. The magnetron can be heard if it is working when the humming sound in the oven changes.

There are three size categories of countertop microwave. The smaller model is labeled by the industry as portable or desktop units. The most common size is about 11 inches tall and 15 inches wide and about 10 inches deep. The bigger countertop model is called the compact microwave oven. These ovens are at least 20 inches wide, 14 inches deep and 12 inches tall. Compact size models are the most popular ovens. The largest oven which can still be considered countertop microwaves is called the medium-capacity oven. These models are a bit larger than the compact ovens and have capacities from 30 to 45 liters.

The most important safety feature when cooking using microwave oven is that there is considerably lower risk of scalding and burning. For example, the walls of the oven rarely get burning hot unlike conventional ovens. The container used in cooking the food rarely gets hotter than 100 degrees, or the boiling point of water. A cooking pot fresh from the gas range or an electric stove is considerably hotter and always poses the danger of creating 1st degree burns. The lower cooking temperature lowers the chances of food getting charred which have been identified to be cancer causing.

The fast cooking time and compact space occupied by countertop microwave ovens make it one of the most popular kitchen appliances. No wonder then most of today’s busy families have one at home.

I ordered this machine and the very time I used it leaked a lot of water above the brew head. And, it was not the gasket. Fortunately Brevilles customer service was excellent. Breville explained that this machine is discontinued and

only available as “refurbished”.

If you research this machine on the web you will find many people had the same problem. Breville customer service was professional and they are sending me an upgraded model at no extra charge.

I found so many cases on the web of this machine leaking I would simply avoid it.

History of the Coffee and Espresso Machine

A large percentage of the population loves to drink both gourmet coffee and espresso drinks. We are all aware of the fact that coffee and espresso provide a boost of energy and they also warm your body up on those cold winter days. Most, however, are not familiar with the history of the coffee and espresso machines, themselves. Without these machines, we probably wouldn’t see such a large population that can easily and affordably prepare these common drinks.

Where did the coffee maker come from?

Since the days of the early Egyptians, coffee has been a staple beverage for most people. Though the Coffee bean originated in Africa, it quickly spread to neighboring countries, like Arabia and Egypt. The first method of bean preparation was to roast the beans on an open fire and then added to boiling water for consumption.

It is believed that coffee was probably considered a type of wine and used to barter and trade. Fermented in much the same as grapes, coffee was a source of energy and warmth for most, but some drank it because they loved the taste, too.

A man by the name of Mr. Laurens came up with the first coffee-making machine in 1818. The machine was constantly modified by coffee drinkers. The coffee machine was actually a product that had just as many patents by women as men, that was practically unheard of at that time!

Through the years, the coffee machine has become a reliable, dependable and easy to use product. In the 1960′s, the first filter machines were invented and the modifications have improved even more since then. Coffee making machines began as crude looking inventions, but have evolved into many different styles, making it possible for a Governor and a Harley biker to own the same style! Found in just about every home, the coffee machine is made by many manufacturers, including: Braun, Senseo, Kitchenaid, Krups and Pod.

Where did the espresso machine come from?

Discovered by a goat herder and developed by a tired, hungry traveler, the espresso drink has provided many with the extra energy they may need. The goat herder noticed the goats acting like they had an extreme boost of energy. As he searched for his heard, he noticed they were snacking on a red berry growing from shrubs. Curious, he ate a berry and felt as if he had suddenly gained more energy as a result. At the same time, a tired, hungry traveler witnesses the occurrences and jumped at the chance to try it for himself. Having the same reactions as the herder and goats, he knew that they were on to something. He took some berries and began to add them to drinks for those in his hometown, as the drink seemed to be a good source of energy. The idea took off from there!

The first espresso maker is said to have originated in Italy in 1901, by Italian manufacturing company owner, Lugia Bezzer. He was simply looking for a way to help speed up his employee’s coffee breaks. He figured out that if pressure was applied in the brewing process, the drink could be made in a lot less time. Nicknamed “The fast coffee machine”, the espresso machine patent was sold in 1905. The new owner, Desidero Pavoni developed an espresso machine that used a piston pump to force water through a tube and into the coffee.

Modifications on the espresso machine were halted by the onset of WWII. Production picked up after the war and in 1946, the commercial espresso machine was invented. Since that time, the espresso maker has been produced by many name brand companies, including: Juda, Mr.Coffee, Kitchenaid and Braun.
